Backstage Tech Crew

Designed for students in grades 5-12. Crew members will be responsible for behind-the-scenes elements including; managing props, operating the smoke machine, helping with costumes, and changing set pieces during the show.
Time Commitment includes Tech Week and 8 performances per production.
General Duties
- Set Changes – Moving scenery, furniture, or props on and off stage quickly and quietly during scene changes.
- Stage Preparation – Making sure the stage is set correctly before the show starts (placing props, presetting furniture, checking scenery).
- Backstage Safety – Keeping pathways clear, securing set pieces, and maintaining a safe working environment.
- Communication – Following cues from the Stage Manager via headset or visual signals.
Specific Crew Roles
- Props Crew
- Sets and tracks hand props.
- Hands off props to actors at the correct times.
- Ensures props are placed back in the correct preset location.
- Fly Crew (if theatre uses a fly system)
- Operates ropes, pulleys, and counterweights to fly scenery, drops, or curtains in and out.
- Follows exact timing cues from the stage manager.
- Deck Crew (Stagehands)
- Handles large scenic shifts.
- Operates moving scenery or wagons.
- Secures or spikes scenery in the correct place.
- Wardrobe Crew / Dressers
- Assist actors with quick changes.
- Maintain costumes during the run.
- Repair or prepare costumes between performances.
- Sound & Light Crew (Running Crew)
- Sometimes assigned backstage to handle practical effects (fog, onstage mics, practical lamps, etc.).
- In smaller productions, may also assist with cueing sound/light from the booth.
During Performances
- Be on standby in case of emergencies (fixing broken props, re-spiking scenery, troubleshooting backstage issues).
- Stay quiet, focused, and ready for cues.
- Reset props/scenery between acts.
- Help actors with special effects or costume changes.
Participation Fee: $80.00 online or $68 by check (drop check in lobby drop box with name of youth and production)
All youth must be pre-approved by the Artistic Director prior to registration and enrollment/payment.
